Collection: DAVID ANDERSEN

David-Andersen AS is a Norwegian goldsmith company founded in 1876 by jeweler David Andersen. The company has a store in Karl Johans gate and other locations in the Oslo area.

History

Jeweler David Andersen established his own goldsmith company in Kristiania (now Oslo) in 1876, moving it to his own premises in Prinsens gate in 1886. After Andersen’s death in 1901, the company was taken over by his wife, Sophia, and their sons, Arthur and Alfred. In 1905, Arthur Andersen changed his last name to David-Andersen, continuing his father’s name in the business. On March 7, 1927, the company opened its store at Karl Johans gate 20, at Egertorget. In 1930, the company moved its workshop to new premises at Trondheimsveien 135. David-Andersen became a limited company in 1959. During the 1950s, Uni David-Andersen established a jewelry workshop tied to the family business.

In 1999, Kristin Gjelseth, daughter of Uni David-Andersen and great-great-granddaughter of the founder, acquired the majority of shares in the company.

David Andersen (25 May 1843 – 3 August 1901) was a Norwegian goldsmith.

He was born in Østre Toten to Anders Svendsen and Anne Margrethe Gulbrandsdatter, and was the father of goldsmith Arthur David-Andersen. From 1859 he was in apprenticeship with the jeweller Jacob Tostrup in Christiana (now called Oslo). He spent several periods abroad, in Berlin, Stockholm, Paris and London.  During his stay in London he also imported Norwegian filigree works to the United Kingdom. He established his own goldsmith workshop in Christiania 1876, which eventually became a leading company in the goldsmith industry in Norway. A significant part of his filigree works was exported to Great Britain. As of 1899 his company employed 92 men and 29 women.
